The medicine

What is PEP?

PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a short course of HIV medicines taken after a possible exposure to HIV. It works by stopping the virus from taking hold in your body.

PEP is an emergency measure. It has to start within 72 hours of the exposure, and the earlier you start, the better it works. You then take it every day for 28 days, without missing doses.

Today’s PEP medicines are generally well tolerated. Some people feel mild nausea or tiredness in the first days, which usually settles. Your doctor explains everything before you start.

PEP at a glance

  • When to start As soon as possible. Within 2 hours is ideal, 72 hours is the limit.

  • Who it’s for Anyone with a possible exposure: condom failure, sex without a condom, sexual assault, shared needles or a needle injury.
  • Side effects Usually mild, if any.
  • Afterwards Follow-up HIV tests confirm you are negative.

Questions

What people ask us most

Can’t find your question? Send it to us. A doctor will answer, in confidence.

How soon do I need to start PEP?

As soon as possible: ideally within 2 hours, and no later than 72 hours after the exposure. After 72 hours PEP is no longer recommended, but you should still get tested and talk to a doctor.

How well does PEP work?

Started early and taken every day for the full 28 days, PEP greatly lowers the chance of HIV infection. It is not 100% guaranteed, which is why follow-up HIV tests are part of the plan.

Does PEP have side effects?

Modern PEP medicines are usually well tolerated. Some people have mild nausea, headache or tiredness in the first few days, which normally settles. Your doctor will tell you what to expect and what to do.

I fly home before the 28 days are over. Can I still start PEP here?

Yes. You start PEP in Phuket, take the rest of the course with you and keep taking it at home. We give you a letter for your own doctor with the medicine names and your follow-up plan.

Can I drink alcohol while taking PEP?

Alcohol doesn’t stop PEP from working, but heavy drinking makes it easier to miss or vomit a dose. Take your tablets at the same time every day and set a phone reminder.

Will anyone find out that I came?

No. Your visit is confidential and we don’t share your information with anyone (your hotel, employer or family included) without your permission.
